1st tropical system of the season

A tropical depression that formed off the coast of Florida is expected to strengthen and soon become the first tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.

WWL TV Meteorologist Laura Buchtel says it will likely be Tropical Storm Arthur later today.

"This is the first system of the season," she said. "It is east of Florida; so it is not in the Gulf, it is not going to the Gulf, it is not going to be in the Gulf."

She says the National Hurricane Center does expect it to become a hurricane as it moves up the lower East Coast.

"It is not going to threaten our 4th of July holiday, but if we have any travelers headed to South Carolina or coastal North Carolina, you may have to watch this," according to Buchtel.

Some models show it staying out at sea, others call for they system to rake the East Coast.
