Guilty plea in DCFS credit card fraud case

A former worker at the Department of Children and Family Services faces up to 10 years in prison for using a state issued purchase card for personal use.

Officials say that 34-year-old Delrice Augustus has pleaded guilty in federal court to the crime.

State Inspector General Stephen Street says Augustus defrauded DCFS out of as much as $200,000.

"Because of the unique position and the authority he held, he was able for a good period of time to get away with taking the public's money," the IG said.
Street says by pleading guilty to charges of theft from a federally-funded entity, Augustus has admitted to using government purchase cards to buy buy home entertainment electronics, a dishwasher and other personal items.
"There's evidence that he turned in false travel invoices and also did things like book hotel suites for the NBA All-Star game," according to Street.
State Police arrested Augustus, who is from Baton Rouge, last March.  Street says this guilty plea should send a clear message that law enforcement has zero tolerance for this sort of corruption.
