Louisiana students won't take sex survey

The Louisiana House rejects legislation that would have allowed the state department of education to survey high school students about their sexual behaviors.

The measure failed on a vote of 38 yeas and 55 nays. Houma representative Lenar Whitney opposed the measure, because she doesn't see a need for the questionnaire.

"I still think the information and awareness of the issue and dealing directly with the children, instead of asking the question, would be better," Whitney said.
But the bill's sponsor, Baton Rouge Representative Patricia Smith, says the answers from these surveys could help experts develop programs that would prevent teenagers from engaging in sexual behaviors. She says these types of surveys have worked to combat other social issues.
"The only way we've dealt with drug use amongst are kids are from these surveys. That way we know how to intervene with those particular problems," according to Smith.
