If you live in most of Jefferson Parish, you will soon get a new garbage can dropped off at your home or small business.
"Beginning today, May 19, 2014, Jefferson Parish will begin transitioning from manual garbage collection to semi-automated collection," Spokeswoman Kris Fortunato said in a news release. "The new system, one of the most efficient systems in use today, offers the advantage of a quieter operation, reduction in wind-blown litter, and the ability to roll the cart versus carrying garbage to the curb."
She says the new 95-gallon carts are bigger than a typical garbage can as each cart will hold the equivalent of 3 standard trash cans.
"Residents will simply roll the cart to the curb, and a garbage truck, featuring an attachment arm, will lift the cart, 'tipping' the contents into the garbage truck, and then return the empty cart back to the curb," Fortunato explained.
She says while some people will get the carts right away, others may not see them for up to four months.
"Cart delivery will be phased in, on an area-by-area basis, anticipated to be completed by September 15, 2014."
If the new carts are too big for some residents, they do have options.
"Smaller 65-gallon carts will be available to elderly and/or disabled residents upon request," according to Fortunato.
Residents can recycle their old garbage cans at the 400 David Drive, Metairie and the 6440 Lapalco Blvd., Marrero Trash Drop-off Sites.
