Gunfire nearby leads to school lockdown

New Orleans Police say gunfire rang out near a high school today in the city's 7th Ward.

At about 10:50 am, we received a call of shots fired and a description of a suspect at Kelerec and Claiborne," Officer Garry Flot said in a news release.  "When officers arrived they found a car with bullets holes and no one inside."

He says cops quickly identified the person believed responsible for the crime.

"Officers spotted the suspect at which time a chase ensued and McDonald 35 school was placed on lock down.  During the foot pursuit, the suspect discarded a gun and drugs and continued to flee on foot.  Officers were unable to apprehend the suspect and the school in off of lock down," Flot said.
