Call for levee officials to reopen all lanes of Lakeshore Drive

Levee authorities in New Orleans are considering lifting the weekend traffic restrictions on Lakeshore Drive, allowing westbound traffic to proceed from the sea wall west of the Bayou St. John Bridge to Marconi Drive.

A group of people want to convince levee authorities to make that change.  Dawn Hebert says the closures make it harder for some residents to enjoy an area that should welcome everyone.

"We think it's time to remove the closures and let everybody enjoy the ride from both ways," said Hebert.  "As a taxpayer of New Orleans, I believe everyone should enjoy the drive along the lake from east to west and west to east."

The westbound lanes are a popular spot for biking and other recreational activities, but Hebert says recent improvements to the Lakefront mean there should be room for all.

"With the construction going on presently on Lakeshore Drive, they're cementing the area from the street to the steps, so why not use that area to walk?" Hebert asks. "People can walk, ride bikes and do everything else, so there's no reason for this particular-- for any closures, really, along the Lakefront."
