Tangipahoa deputy kills man allegedly attacking mother

A Northshore cop has killed a suspect.

State Police are investigating after a Tangipahoa deputy shot the man in Hammond.

Trooper Greg Marchand says it started as a domestic call on Deborah Drive.

The Sheriff's office says deputies arrived at the home around 2:00pm to find man with a knife hurting a woman.

Investigator say the woman's life was threatened, so a deputy shot the suspect.

State Police say 48-year-old Michael Nichols died as a result.

It was the suspect's mother, 70-year-old Barbara Nichols, who called police for help.

She was hospitalized.

The sheriff's office says it is protocol to have troopers investigate deputy involved shootings.
