Abita Springs child kidnapped, locked in bathroom

Northshore cops say a man kidnapped a six-year-old boy in Abita Springs.

Detectives say the mom called after the child disappeared from the yard.

"Shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday, the mother of a 6-year-old Abita Springs boy called 911 to report her son was missing.  She told deputies the child was playing outside their home when she went inside briefly to use the restroom," Spokeswoman Suzanne Carboni said in a news release.  "When she returned the child was no longer in the yard. "

Deputies began canvassing nearby homes, searching for the child. They found the little boy locked in a neighbor's bathroom.

Investigators say they man lied to the mother when she asked him about the child.

"A neighbor, David Ledet, told her he saw the child get into a white vehicle," according to Carboni. But officials say as they asked Ledet more questions about the vehicle, suspicious behavior tipped them off.

"Our deputies on the scene began getting the information for the report, and...Ledet was acting uneasy or a little strange," said Sheriff Jack Strain. He said detectives believed Ledet was being less than forthcoming with some questions they were asking him.

"Deputies decided to search the home and pretty quickly found the six-year-old locked in a bathroom," the sheriff said.

Listen to Sheriff Jack Strain's interview with WWL's Chris Miller:

Strain said he believes the mother's quick call to 911 may have been the difference-maker:

"By the mom calling 911 the second she realized something wasn't right, really helped speed up the entire response," said Strain.

They 49-year-old man was charged with kidnapping and locked up in the St. Tammany Parish jail.

"Ledet's address is not being provided to protect the identity of the child."
