Finance reports show Landrieu raising more than Cassidy

First quarter reports for the money side of Louisiana's U.S. Senate race show incumbent Democrat Mary Landrieu out-raising her closest competitor by more than half a million dollars.

In the first three months of 2014, Landrieu's campaign reports raising $1.8 million. Republican Congressman Bill Cassidy picked up $1.2 million.

Pollster Bernie Pinsonat says Cassidy could probably get more money, but he still has challengers within his own party to deal with: retired Air Force Colonel Rob Manness and state representative Paul Hollis.

"Cassidy hasn't really established himself as 'the' Republican yet," said Pinsonat. As for Landrieu, even though she already had a lot of money on hand at the start of the campaign, Pinsonat says she can't afford to sit back.

"Landrieu needs more money. I think at this point in time she's got to defend herself," he said.

While third party groups have been running some ads, Pinsonat says the candidates will probably start spending their money soon, to get their message out the public.
