Ninth-ranked LSU erupted for 17 runs to sweep the series over Mississippi State Sunday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
The Tigers return to action Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to face Lamar. The game will not be televised, but can be heard on the LSU Sports Radio Network. Members of the Geaux Zone can access live audio and video at LSUsports.net/live.
LSU moved to 24-8-1 on the year, while Mississippi State dropped to 20-13.
Parker Bugg (1-1) earned the win for LSU after pitching 1.2 innings only allowing one run, one hit and striking out three batters. Mississippi State starting pitcher, Dakota Hudson (1-2), was charged the loss. Hudson only lasted 2.2 innings giving up six hits, six runs and walked three batters.
Hudson got into trouble in the bottom of the first after loading the bases. With two outs, Tyler Moore singled to left field to plate Mark Laird. Conner Hale followed with an RBI single to center field to make it a 2-0 game.
LSU added two more runs in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded again, Laird doubled down the left field line to score Andrew Stevenson and Sean McMullen.
With two outs in the third inning, Stevenson hit an RBI single. McMullen followed with a two-run double down to make it a 7-0 game.
Mississippi State responded in the fourth inning with an RBI double by Gavin Collins to score Jake Vickerson. The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by C.T. Bradford to cut it to 7-2.
With the bases loaded for the third time, Laird hit an RBI single to score Christian Ibarra. Alex Bregman then hit a single up the middle for two runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ibarra blasted a solo home run to left field. Laird then notched his fourth RBI of the afternoon to score Stevenson. Mississippi State walked Bregman to load the bases. Kade Scivicque then blasted a grand slam to make it a 16-2 game.
Jake Fraley led of the seventh inning by reaching second on a throwing error by the third baseman. After moving to second on an infield single, Fraley scored on an RBI groundout by Stevenson.
Mississippi State added two more runs in the eighth inning and ninth inning off of an RBI ground out by Cody Walker and an RBI double by Bradford.
