Officials conduct drill for upcoming hurricane season

With hurricane season right around the corner, emergency preparedness officials are going through a statewide training exercise that's testing their disaster response capabilities.

Kevin Davis, director of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, says federal, state and local agencies are participating in this drill.

"It's a good exercise for state and local government to know those partnerships and how we are going to react," Davis explained.

On Saturday the exercise will include three staging areas that will be located in Plaquemines, St. Charles and Calcasieu Parishes. Davis says they'll conduct mock search-and-rescue activities, go over evacuation procedures and test communication systems.

"It's really important to go through the whole process, not just a piece of it," he said.
