Counterfeit money found in home where man killed

Amite Police Chief Jerry Trabona says authorities found $421,000 in counterfeit cash inside a home where a woman is accused of fatally shooting her brother on March 18.

Trabona said officers found about $231,000 in counterfeit cash on the same day 62-year-old Alfred Hill was shot and killed.

His sister, Daryl Lynn Hill, 63, remains in jail on a count of manslaughter, Tangipahoa Parish Jail records reveal.

Officers noticed about half of the cash appeared pale and didn't carry the usual watermarks of genuine currency, Trabona said.

"Some of it looked pretty good," Trabona said. "But some of it looked pale-looking."

Amite officers called the U.S. Secret Service on Monday about the counterfeit cash, Trabona said. The Secret Service has jurisdiction over counterfeit money cases.

Secret Service agents searched the Second Street home Monday and seized four printers and another $190,000 in counterfeit bills. Police are not sure yet who exactly was making the fake cash, Trabona said.

Police do not believe the counterfeit money was a motive for the shooting, but the investigation is ongoing, Trabona said.
