A Houma mother, 19-year-old Tina Simpson has been arrested for the attempted second degree murder of her one month old child.
Captain Dawn Foret with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office says Simpson admitted to deputies she had violently shaken and thrown the infant in the air and into his bassinet.
"She said the basically the baby wouldn't stop crying and had been agitating her for some time and she was trying to stop the baby from crying," Foret said.
Foret says the infant was air-lifted to Terrebonne General Medical Center where the extent of the child's injuries were determined.
"When the baby got to the hospital, it was apparent through a C.A.T. scan and the doctor's examination, that there was massive brain injury to this one month old infant including multiple skull fractures," according to the captain.
Foret says Simpson was then taken into custody and is being held at the Terrebonne Parish jail.
"At this point she has been charged with one count of attempted second degree murder. The baby is in critical condition at a hospital in New Orleans, but at this time is still unresponsive."
