New Orleans police say a man killed an attacker who was sexually assaulting a woman.
"Police are investigating a Homicide of a 26-year-old man who was fatally wounded after brandishing a handgun and sexually assaulting a woman," Officer Garry Flot said in a news release. "The incident occurred at approximately 9:25 P.M., in the 3800 block of North Rampart Street."
Investigators say it started when the suspect approached the man and woman as they walked down the street.
"The man produced a gun and demanded that they walk to a building that was being renovated. Once they entered the yard, the man sexually assaulted the woman at which time the adult male disarmed the man and fatally shot him," Flot said.
Detectives say they have the gun, are running tests on it and researching the weapon's history.
Police did not charge anyone with a crime, but will turn the information over to prosecutors.
"The adult man and woman were interviewed and released," Flot explained. "The investigation is ongoing and the District Attorney's Office will review the case."
