Detillier: Saints should target O line in free agency

The NFL Free agency period begins this afternoon at three o'clock. What will the Saints do? NFL analyst Mike Detillier says their main focus should be looking for someone to fill the right tackle position. The Saints right tackle last season Zach Streif is a free agent and is expected to talk with other teams to see what they will offer.

"This football team needs to get better at right tackle, cornerback and safety in veteran free agency. That is where, I think, if you've got money, you should spend that cash," Detillier says.

Detillier says the Saints will only be able to sign one big name free agent because of the salary cap. He says any left over money should go to improving the defensive backfield.

"It's in the secondary, you just never have enough cover people. The game is pitch and catch today, that's how the rules are set up. It's not just having two good cornerbacks, it's having three and if you look at the team that won it all, they've got four! It's the same in the safety position," Detillier says.

There are reports that running back Pierre Thomas could be another veteran Saints player that could be released. Detillier says it would be a mistake for the Saints to get rid of Thomas because he is one the best pass catching running backs in the league.

"The big loss would be Thomas because of his pass protection skills and also his ability to catch the football clearly out of the back field. I don't think there has ever been another player that wore the black and gold that has caught the screen pass better than Pierre Thomas," Detillier says.
