The poles get greased

Scantily clad dancers grabbed handfuls of Vaseline today and spread it on balcony supports in the French Quarter.

New Orleans native Bryan Batt from "Mad Men," "12 Years a Slave" and much more was the master of ceremonies for the fun at the Royal Sonesta Hotel.

It was the 44th Annual Greasing of the Poles.  It's a ceremonial event that organizers say helps prevent revelers on Bourbon Street from climbing the poles to the coveted balconies above.  The event unofficially marks the start of the long Mardi Gras weekend.

Burlesque vixen Trixie Minx and members from the burlesque show "Fleur de Tease" helped slather the petroleum jelly on the poles.

The Pussyfooters of New Orleans performed.

Members of the New Orleans Saints, the Saintsations and mascot Sir Saint also took part.

The Saints players were Thomas Morstead, Terron Armstead, and Justin Drescher.  (Malcolm Jenkins was a judge)

Celebrity Judges:
Jodi Borrello -- Nationally touring comedian
Malcolm Jenkins -- #27 for the New Orleans Saints
John Folse -- Executive Chef at Restaurant R'evolution
Madame X -- Surprise celebrity judge
