Arrest made in death of 15-month-old Jefferson child
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has arrested a suspect in the death of a 15-month-old child.
Sheriff Newell Normand says 28-year-old Troy Kelly was booked Friday evening with one count of First Degree Murder in the death of 15-month-old Semaj Batiste.
Kelly, of 317 N. Elm Street in Metairie, is the boyfriend of 27-year-old Alencia Batiste, the child's mother.
The child was pronounced dead Friday morning after EMS responded to a call from a woman who said the child wasn't breathing. Responders pronounced the infant dead on the scene.
An autopsy performed on the child showed that he suffered blunt force trauma and internal injuries and the death was classified as a homicide.
After being questioned regarding the child's death, Kelly told detectives he became angry over the boy's behavior while he was bathing him and two of his siblings Thursday evening, February 20th.
Investigators say Kelly further confessed that he forcefully removed the child from the bathtub by grabbing his arm and slung his body into the commode, causing the infant to strike his head and upper body.
Police say Kelly admitted he realized the boy was severely injured, however he did not seek medical attention for Batiste.
Troy Kelly has a prior criminal history with arrests for: Simple Battery, numerous narcotics charges, Resisting an Officer and Unauthorized entry of an Inhibited Dwelling.
