Troopers prepare to close roads

Louisiana State Police will have extra patrols out in an effort to avoid the dramatic increase they saw in weather related accidents during last Friday's winter storm. LSP Spokesman Captain Doug Cain says there was a 400% increase in weather related crashes including six fatality crashes.
"This is round two and round two looks like it may be a little more challenging than round one. Our biggest message is to stay off the roadways unless it is emergency traffic. I can't stress that enough," Cain says.

Cain says the LSP is working closely with DOTD to salt, sand and de-ice the roads. He says they are trying to manage and asses roadways to ensure the safest conditions.
"We realize the inconvenience it causes for the public when we close roads and we don't want it closed any longer than we have to but we are going to not open it until it is absolutely safe to do so," Cain says.
Cain says having extra troopers on patrol will help them determine which roads need to be closed due to icy conditions.
"Troopers are actually driving up and down these highways, driving across bridges, hitting their breaks, trying to determine if it is safe to pass," Cain says.
