St. John the Baptist Parish updates

Wednesday, January 29, 2014 – 6:00 p.m.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH – St. John Parish remains under a Hard Freeze Warning until 9:00 a.m.  Thursday morning, with temperatures expected in the low-to-mid 20s overnight for 14 to 18 hours.  Temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing until mid-morning Thursday.  Surface roads and bridges are in fair condition; however, motorists should look out for small patches of ice and use caution while driving and walking. 

All public, private and parochial schools - CLOSED Thursday, January 30, 2014.

GOVERNMENT OFFICES - OPEN Thursday, January 30.

1.       Veterans Memorial Bridge – closed

2.       Hale Boggs Bridge – 1 lane closed in both directions – only accessible from River Road

3.       I-55 Northbound & Southbound – closed - Old Hwy. 51 (low road) is open for traffic

4.       I-10 Eastbound & Westbound – closed between Lafayette and New Orleans - Traffic is being routed to Airline Hwy.

5.       Check lsp.org for road updates

Public Works crews have placed sand on local bridges and roadways where needed.  Please proceed with caution on roadways as ice may appear in new locations when below freezing temperatures enter the area tonight.

Most businesses are open, but are encouraged to consider road safety for employees when making  decisions for tomorrow.  All businesses will close by 10:00 p.m. tonight with the exception of gas stations.  No alcohol sales after 10:00 p.m.

Water consumption is at capacity and residents MUST minimize the use of water until further notice. ALL activities that require large quantities of water including filling bath tubs, washing clothes, running dishwashers, flushing toilets should be minimized.
Do NOT drip faucets during the day with normal activity within the home. While sleeping, a slow drip of only one faucet is recommended. If consumption is not reduced, residents will experience loss of water pressure or a complete loss of water.

Services will resume Thursday, January 30.
