Deep freeze for the deep south

Get ready for another deep south deep freeze!  It could mean transportation headaches as well as downed power lines.

This front will come right across our portion of the state, "sweeping all the way across the Florida parishes to St. Tammany Parish, and parts of the Mississippi Coast" said Fred Zeigler with the National Weather Service office in Slidell, and he said it will be pretty nasty.

"We're looking at some pretty significant frozen precipitation amounts," he said.

And the cold will last long enough to potentially ice over bridges and overpasses. By Friday evening, most bridges in metro New Orleans were dealing with closures or lane restrictions.  This system may even bring down power lines.

"That may pose a bigger threat for power lines and trees that may accumulate some of the ice," said Zeigler.  "Some of these power outages, in some instances in the past, have been outages that could last more than three days."
