Chase of murder suspect ends in bayou

Cops in Terrebonne parish say they have arrested a man for murder after he dove into a bayou and tried to swim away from officers.

It started when police responded to a house in Houma where a neighbor checking on a man found the 68-year-old victim dead.

"Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said... the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of a man found dead inside of his home located at 3011 La. Highway 316 Houma, La.," Major Malcolm Wolfe said in a news release.  "The victim was identified as Rickie Samanie (above), age-68.  Samanie owns a 2003 black in color Ford F-150 pick-up truck with an extra cab that was missing from the scene."

A short time later, police spotted the missing truck.

"Shortly afterwards a T.P.S.O detective spotted the victim's vehicle traveling on West Main St. through the Gray area," Wolfe explained.  "The suspect refused to stop."

He says the chase involved the suspect driving the wrong way against traffic on Highway 90 before he headed for the water.

"The chase continued on Bayou Blue and the suspect made a right turn onto Cliffwood Dr. and another right turn onto Adeline Dr. where he drove to the bayou and abandoned the vehicle,"  Wolfe explained.  "The suspect jumped into the bayou and swam away from the police."

Police surrounded the area.

"The T.P.S.O K-9 began to track the suspect.   Shortly after the suspect climbed out of the water onto the bank and began yelling at the police in order to surrender... The suspect is identified as Cody Anthony Callais (right), age-38, 117 Shamrock Dr. Houma, La.   Callais admitted to the murder of Rickie Samanie."

Callais is currently in a local hospital receiving treatment for hypothermia.

Police think robbery was the motive for the murder.
