The Saints have put a player on Injured Reserve and signed a new player. Here is the release:
The New Orleans Saints announced Wedneday that they have signed cornerback Terrence Frederick from the Cleveland Browns practice squad and placed safety Kenny Vaccaro on Injured Reserve. The announcements were made by Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis.
Frederick, 5 feet 10, 187, comes to New Orleans after spending the entire regular season on Browns practice squad. The former Texas A&M standout was originally a seventh-round draft choice (246th pick overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012. After competing for the roster spot in the 2012 preseason with the Steelers, the Katy, Texas native spent most of the regular season on the practice squad of the New York Giants before appearing in two games in December, where he recorded two special teams tackles. He also spent the entire 2013 offseason and preseason with the Giants. A two-time honorable All-Big 12 selection (2011, 2010), he finished his college career for the Aggies with 205 tackles, six sacks, four interceptions and 29 pass breakups. As a senior in 2011, he started every game at cornerback and was named all-Big 12 honorable mention after making 54 stops (43 solo).
Vaccaro, the team’s 2013 first-round draft choice from Texas, suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the club’s 17-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. In 2013, he appeared in 14 and totaled 92 tackles (60 solo), one sack, one interception and six pass defenses.
Saints Coach Sean Payton announced Wednesday that the team had signed receiver Charles Hawkins to the practice squad and released wide receiver Chris Williams from the squad.
The Saints (10-5) play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-11) at 3:25 p.m. Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. If the Saints win Sunday they are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. If the Saints win and the Carolina Panthers lose to the Atlanta Falcons the Saints will claim the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye.
