Louisiana has the worst drivers?

CarInsuranceComparison.com ranks Louisiana number one in the country for having the worst drivers. The website claims the state is among the worst when it comes to obeying traffic laws, the number of traffic tickets issued each year and careless driving. Louisiana Highway Safety Commission spokesperson Elaine Rogeau disagrees with the ranking.

"The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission believes the state is being penalized for having a strong traffic safety enforcement program," Rogeau said.

Rogeau says the fact that Louisiana law enforcement is ticketing motorists at a higher rate than other states is a good thing.

"When you look at traffic safety programs and the aggressiveness and consistency in which a state issues citations, or has high visibility on the roads, than we are proud."

The company that did the rankings points out that Louisiana has among the highest fatality rates in the nation.
