Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards is praising a pair of pilots for safely landing a plane in a field after the aircraft encountered an emergency.

"The pilots reported that they were flying about 3000 feet and holding when the pilot noticed that there were losing oil pressure and quickly the system failed completely," according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

He says the pilots decided to makes an emergency landing in a pasture about 8 miles form the Hammond Airport.

"On board the single engine Areo 112 was 60 year old pilot and owner Nicholas Burtchaell of Folsom and instructor pilot Otis D. Briggs of Kentwood, LA." the release states.  "The pilots... began to descend the airplane and at approximately 600 feet, the engine failed."

Edwards says the pilots noted the pasture was clear of houses and power lines.

"Moments later, the pilots did an outstanding job putting the plan on the ground.  Both pilots walked away without injuries... The landing site was in Folsom near Turn Pike Rd."
