Ice skating at Audubon

There's something new at the zoo today...ice skating.

Zoo patrons are invited to glide into the holiday season, with a day of ice skating at Audubon Zoo on Sunday.

"We'll have a rink, from 11 to 4, under our majestic oaks and people can skate to their heart's content," says Audubon Zoo spokeswoman Chimene Grant.

Of course, local weather conditions don't quite allow for an actual outdoor skating rink here.

"The rink is actually synthetic ice," says Grant. "It's made from a high-tech plastic. It's about 40 feet by 28 feet, and can hold about 35 people at a time."

The 'ice' is made from a non-toxic, recyclable acrylic material that enables a skate blade to glide as smoothly as if it were on real ice.

"It feels exactly like you're skating on ice," Grant says. "So, you can come out and do all of your moves as if you were on television across the world."

"It's a first for us. We always try to do something a little different for the holidays. So this year, we decided to bring in an ice rink."

And, you don't even have to own skates.

"Skates will be provided, free of charge. As part of your zoo admission or your membership, you're free to enjoy the skating rink. Again, about 35 people at a time on the rink, so there may be a little bit of waiting involved but, hopefully, not too much."

"It's our own little mini-Rockefeller Center, right here in New Orleans," says Grant.
