U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu is urging Louisiana residents to support Small Business Saturday, an annual event when shoppers are asked to visit small locally owned businesses.
Landrieu is Chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business. She says there are thousands of organizations who support the idea of shopping close to home.
"Not only does it help the small business and that entrepreneur that's taken a good bit of risk to start and grow their business...but, for every hundred dollars spent, about 68 dollars turns right back into your own economy and neighborhood."
Landrieu says shopping your neighborhood gift shops is not only a great way to support the local economy, but that's where you'll also find the more unique Christmas presents.
"Local arts and crafts, sometimes very fine gifts...unique things that aren't found in some of the big malls and stores. And, it's not as crowded, usually. So, pick a couple of spots. It's just a great way to support the local businesses."
"It just works," says Landrieu. "It's a fun day and I think the small businesses around Louisiana and our country really appreciate it."
