Largest Carnival ship to cruise from New Orleans arrives this weekend

Carnival Cruise Lines is sailing a new ship to New Orleans.

The Carnival 'Sunshine' will cruise into town on Sunday, and become the largest Carnival ship to ever sail from the city.

"She's 102-thousand tons and she's carrying over 3,000 guests," says John Heald, Carnival's Senior Cruise Director.

The Sunshine was the largest cruise ship in the world when it was christened in 1996.

"And, this ship is back in the record books, because it is the first ship to go through such a stunning and complete rejuvenation," says Heald.

The totally transformed Carnival Sunshine underwent a groundbreaking $155 million makeover that added a variety of innovations

"We've added so many new things," Heald says. "A brand new waterworks, which includes a 334-foot freshwater slide. It's the longest in our Carnival fleet."

The Sunshine also features three levels of 'Serenity Deck'.

"This is our adults-only deck, with a beautiful pool and a waterfall that cascades down the three decks into the pool below."

A spectacular outdoor recreation area features a suspended ropes course with views to the sea 150 feet below.

The Sunshine further bolsters Carnival Cruise Lines position as New Orleans largest cruise operator, carrying more than 330,000 guests from the Port of New Orleans aboard two year-round ships.

"Carnival's the only cruise line that has two ships, year-round from New Orleans, and we have a tremendous relationship with the city," says Heald.

"The people from Louisiana and the surrounding states seem to love cruising and they love Carnival."

In April, the Sunshine will be replaced by the 3,646-passenger Carnival Dream, which Carnival Cruise Lines currently plans to keep in New Orleans.
