Kenner cop shoot, kills suspect in stolen car

Kenner police today say one of their officers fatally shot a man Friday night, as the man allegedly was trying to run the officer down with a stolen vehicle.

According to Kenner Police the officer "received a stolen vehicle hit from a License Plate Recognition camera" around 7:00 p.m. Friday.

Police say the uniformed officer approached the 2009 Nissan in the 3500 block of Martinique Avenue and saw a man lying back in the driver's seat, possibly to avoid detection. The engine was running.

"The officer attempted to have the suspect acknowledge him while giving verbal commands," said Sergeant Brian McGregor with Kenner Police.

"The suspect accelerated the vehicle and rapidly advanced towards the officer. The officer, fearing for his life, discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect inside the vehicle," he said.

Kenner police announced this morning that the suspect later died. The investigation is continuing.
