Fake IRS agents calling for cash

The IRS is warning Louisianans of a sophisticated telephone scam, where con artists pose as the IRS.

Spokeswoman Dee Harris Stepter says the callers are able to "spoof" caller ID and make it look as if the call is coming from the IRS.

She says the scammers try to convince victims to pay an outstanding tax debt that they do not really owe.

Stepter urges people to get detailed info from anyone who calls claiming to be with the IRS.

"Get their name and badge number, then hang up and call the IRS toll free number to verify this person's identity," she urged.

The IRS toll free number is 800-829-1040.
