Pelicans squander 14-point halftime lead to spoil premiere, lose 95-90 to Pacers

Professional basketball in New Orleans entered a new chapter on Wednesday night as the city's NBA franchise made its official debut under its new moniker, the Pelicans. The team sported a new mascot named Pierre, a new playing surface, and a revamped roster featuring offseason acquisitions Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans joining returning stars Eric Gordon and Anthony Davis. Unfortunately, the team couldn't deliver a victory to go with all the pomp and pageantry as a promising first half gave way to a disappointing defeat to the Indiana Pacers (2-0).
.
The Pelicans (0-1) led by as much as 16 points in the first half but watched their lead dwindle and eventually disappear as last year's Eastern Conference runner-up closed the gap in the third quarter and eventually overtook their hosts in the fourth. The Pels had three players top 20 points - Gordon had 25 points on the night with Holiday adding 24 and Davis chipping in 20 - but it wasn't enough to keep down a team considered a serious championship contender.

The Pacers' Paul George led all scorers with 32 points.

The Pelicans are back in action Friday night in Orlando against the 0-2 Magic, who fell in overtime Wednesday night to the Minnesota Timberwolves 120-115. Tipoff will be 6pm, and we'll have the game on 105.3 WWL FM.
