"We should be able to give your officers a 30 precent raise," Councilmember Cynthia Hedge-Morrell told the police chief at today's budget hearings.
It comes as cops have lost big bucks with the reworking of the detail system that pays officers for private security work.
"The solution is to offer a more attractive pay plan," she contended.
The councilwoman says the 30 percent pay hike would more than make up for the losses.
"I think that would be a nirvana that any police chief in America would like," Chief Ronal Serpas responded. "Imagine if New Orleans led that initiative where paid details were no longer part of the program because the pay surpassed what paid detail income was."
He noted that there would also still have to be some overtime for major events.
The eight million dollar plus proposal to give the raise to all officers up to the rank of captain will be considered as the council moves through the budget process in the coming weeks.
Serpas urged that an extra half million dollars be included to give all officers the raise. Hedge-Morrell said if he could find the extra money, she would add that to the proposal.
