Pelicans ready to take flight -- are the fans?

New Orleans professional basketball begins a new era tonight -- the newly-christened Pelicans launch their 2013-2014 NBA campaign tonight at the New Orleans Arena.

New Orleans' NBA team has been campaigning for the fans' attention and loyalty ever since the team moved here from Charlotte.  The most recent push before the team re-branded was the Hornets' "I'm in" campaign, that enlisted local celebrities and even New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu in their ad campaign. Now the team has a new name, a multi-year deal to play at the New Orleans Arena, and a new name. But has the marketing worked? It depends on who you ask.

"We're definitely excited about the new team and the new players that they've brought," said one fan.  "It's probably going to be one of the best seasons we've had as a basketball fan in New Orleans."

"I finally think they have the pieces in place to actually make the playoffs and go past the first round, maybe," another fan said.

For others, it takes a while for them to get into an 82-game season.

"As the season goes on, maybe so," said one man.  "When it's the playoffs, then I start getting a little more interested in it."

The Pelicans open the season at home tonight against the Indiana Pacers.  Tip-time is 7:00 and you can tune in for the game on 105.3 WWL-FM.
