Oreos as addictive as cocaine?
Research out of Connecticut College shows that Oreo cookies are as addictive as cocaine based on a study with lab rats.
Dr. Stefany Primeaux of the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans says that Oreos activate the same neurochemical sensors in the brain as cocaine.
"Foods and addictive drugs can activate the same reward pathways in the brain," Primeaux says.
Primeux says this study explains why people continue to eat unhealthy foods even when they know it's not good for them.
"When we eat these high- fat and high- sugar foods, like the Oreo cookies, we could develop some sort of tolerance to them and then we need more cookies to make us feel the pleasure," Primeaux says.
Primeaux says this study shows why its hard for people to stay away from sweets and strong will power is needed to wean yourself off the high fat and sugar foods.
"Our first step would be to not purchase them, to limit our access them and really a lot of control on our part."
