Murder is up in Jefferson Parish for the first three months of the year. According to the sheriff's office, murder is up 38.5 percent through September 30, 2013 compared to the same time last year.
That's ten more killings -- 36 total -- but even so, SUNO criminologist Dr. John Penny says it's a cause for concern.
"I would be concerned about that amount of increase," Penny told WWL First News. "The issue right there is to find out why such an increase, and what are the things that are stimulating such an increase."
SUNO criminology professed Dr. John Penny says for Jefferson leaders, the question is, "Why is this happening at this time when we should have perhaps the best professional law enforcement in the area."
Penny says even with a top-notch sheriff's department, there are other issues that need to be addressed, and can't be addressed with law enforcement alone
Overall crime is down in Jefferson 0.2 percent. with robbery and burglary leading the way in the decline.
