NOLA to bid for Super Bowl LII -- so what now?

It's a go: local leaders are putting together a presentation for NFL owners to convince them that New Orleans will be the best place for the league to play Super Bowl LII.

Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation President Jay Cicero says it's an honor to be asked by the league to make a bid for the big game.

"The final presentation is May of 2014 to the owners," Cicero said. In the meantime, his foundation, local tourism leaders, city and state officials, and the New Orleans Saints will work together to craft make the best pitch.

Competing with New Orleans are Indianapolis and Minneapolis.  Although the Crescent City has the advantage when it comes to winter weather, Cicero says this is no slam-dunk. The Superdome will have been in service 42 years by the time Super Bowl LII is played.  Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis will only be ten years old by then, and the Minnesota Vikings should have a stadium that is only two years old by the winter of 2018.

"Indianapolis has hosted it once, a couple of years ago, and Minneapolis is getting a new stadium," said Cicero, "and the NFL likes new stadiums for Super Bowls."

Superdome officials are already brainstorming what upgrades can be made, even thought the stadium just completed repair and renovation work in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The league will decide which of the three cities gets to host Super Bowl LII at the NFL owners meeting in May.
