Thibodaux council considers park smoking ban

Smoking along the walkways at Peltier Park may soon be prohibited.

The Courier reports the Thibodaux City Council introduced such legislation at Tuesday's meeting.

Mayor Tommy Eschete says citizens are noticing cigarette butts around the park and would like to see them cleaned up.

If passed, Eschete said the city will probably send out park personnel to monitor the walkways.

"Just someone to tell them that they're not supposed to smoke in that area," Eschete said.

Local littering fines could also apply.

The measure appears to be aimed at Nicholls State University, where smoking is banned campus-wide and whose students, faculty and staff go to the nearby park to smoke.

Council Administrator Jenny Morvant sent a memorandum to council members prior to the meeting saying indicating just that.

Nicholls State student Peter Grabert, 20 of Lockport, said the ordinance is definitely aimed at students.

The park is one of the only spots that students are able to smoke, Grabert said.

The city will vote on the ordinance at the Oct. 15 meeting.
