Saenger opens today as 'anchor' to area's redevelopment
Dave Cohen Reporting
The Saenger Theatre reopens today after a seven year project that cost 52 million dollars.
"It's gonna be right at the heart of the redevelopment of Canal Street," New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu noted. "I'm really excited about that. It's gonna help anchor the entire area that we are working on around the Iberville, and it's gonna completely anchor the Quarter and the commercial development all the way from the River over to the I-10, so I am really ecstatic about it."
Developers say the project features an authentic restoration of the original 1927 design.
A news release says, "New, state of the art building and technical systems including an expanded theatre stage house will ensure that the Saenger will be able to host the very finest performing arts attractions. New theatre seating, increased concessions and restroom facilities along with new lounge areas complete the scope of this truly remarkable effort!"
The theater has been shuttered since Hurricane Katrina.
"What you see today is the culmination of seven years of very hard work," said Cindy Connick with the Canal Street Redevelopment Corporation.
