Scores of Northshore stores selling alcohol to minors
Dave Cohen Reporting
Northshore cops are cracking down on businesses selling beer and booze to people under 21.
"Over 90 retailers in Tangipahoa Parish have been cited over the past year for the illegal sale of alcoholic beverages to persons under 21," Spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto said in a news release. "TPSO Juvenile detectives had undercover juveniles visit numerous retail locations and attempt to purchase alcohol illegally."
Sheriff Daniel Edwards says that over the past 12 months, they conducted nearly 500 undercover visits.
"We are making progress," Edwards said. "I am extremely pleased with the efforts of my detectives. We see underage drinking and the purchasing of alcohol for underage consumption as a community-wide issue that will take the combined efforts of law enforcement and our community to combat."
He says they are fining businesses up to $500.00 on a first offense and up to $1,000.00 on the second offense. If they do it again, they can lose their alcohol license.
Panepinto says more busts are expected.
"This is an ongoing operation for the sheriff's office and more store checks are planned."
