Bobby Hebert: Saints D was outstanding!



This is going to go a long way, this is how you needed to start the season.  I think the Saints got their swagger back.  Whenever you have a game like that by the defense, that’s going to go a long way.

The defense was outstanding. What more can you say about Rob Ryan and what he did with these guys, and the turnaround, to give them confidence.  I mean, they played with so much confidence.  They were outstanding on 3rd down defense in preseason, and they were outstanding today.  I would like to look at the stats from all the games…and when all is said and done, the Saints, if they’re not #1, they’re probably 1 or 2 on 3rd down defense.  The Falcons, a top 10 offense, they were only three of 11, 27 percent…and we were 46 percent on 3rd downs.  So when you look at time of possession and having sustained drives, it’s what are you doing on 3rd down?

What do you call a bend but don’t break attitude?  I guarantee you, if we hold our opponents in the teens, we’ll go 16-0.  Holding the Falcons to 17, that’s a great achievement.  I think both defenses were good in red zone, but the Falcons weren’t quite as good as the Saints.

When we saw what occurred at the end… When, listen, I was worried, and I said, “We gotta get a touchdown.”  But the Saints come up big on 4th down.  And another area in which we were outstanding was the turnover ratio.  We were finally plus-one.  And if we can be even, or plus one, and we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot, that’s going to go a long way to helping us to continue to win.

Like I said: You beat Tampa on the road, and everyone’s chasing you on the division.  Everyone in the division lost but us lost.  So that’s going to be critical that we keep this momentum going, and take care of business.

Now, I thought it would be more of a shootout, so you got to give both defenses credit, especially in the red zone.  It did come down to the last possession. 8 of the last 11 games came down to the last possession.
