New bus service links New Orleans and Baton Rouge
A new daily, non-stop bus service is now available for folks traveling between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
Megabus.com is now offering three trips daily between the cities, with fares starting at one dollar.
That's the lowest possible fare you'll pay when you book on-line.
"And, once the one dollar fares sell out, then the fares go up to the next level...could be four dollars. And, once that sells out, it goes to the next level."
Company spokesman Mike Alvich says it's a yield-management system often used by airlines and hotels.
The fares incrementally go up, the closer you get to your departure date.
Best bet is to book early, and travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The best fares are usually available 30 to 45 days in advance.
The daily non-stops leave New Orleans at 12:15 a.m., 7:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.
Alvich says the demise of LA Swift was a factor in establishing the service.
"But, what was more important to us, was that you have LSU...a very large student base available out of Baton Rouge, and college students are a large part of our customer base."
And, he says a lot of folks may want to take the bus to LSU football games.
The drop-off point in Baton Rouge is downtown at Florida and Third streets, convenient to the First Transit shuttle to the LSU campus.
The arrival and departure point in New Orleans for Megabus.com is on Bienville Street near the Westin Hotel.
The busses are state-of-the art double-deckers, with reclining seats for 77 passengers, free Wi-Fi, power outlets and restrooms.
LA Swift service between New Orleans and Baton Rouge was discontinued at the end of July, and was reportedly serving 12,000 riders monthly.
Megabus has served New Orleans since 2012, offering routes to Houston, Atlanta, Mobile and Montgomery, Alabama.
The company offers express bus service to more than 100 cities in the United States and Canada.
