Connick Jr. to be Idol judge

Another New Orleans native is going to be a judge on one of the most successful shows on TV.  Producers say Harry Connick Jr. is joining the panel on American Idol.

Last season he mentored contestants on an episode and later talked with former judge, and New Orleans native, Ellen Degeneres on her TV show.

"I had a really good time," he told Degeneres.  "I had a good time mentoring.  Judge is a different deal.  I don't know how good I would be at that."

Degeneres said she thought Connick would do a good job.  Apparently the show's executives agree.

Connick joins Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban as American Idol judges next season.

Former judge Randy Jackson, from the Baton Rouge area, will change his role on the show and serve as an in-house mentor.

Idol begins its 13th season in January.
