The NOPD has suspended an officer without pay after he was arrested for driving under the influence following a crash on the I-10 Twin Spans early this morning.
State Police Spokesman Trooper Nick Manale says the crash happened this morning shortly after 2:30 a.m. as NOPD officer JaySon Germann was driving an unmarked NOPD Chevy Impala.
NOPD officials said in a statement that the vehicle was Germann's take-home car.
According to Trooper Manale, Officer Germann was traveling eastbound on the Twin Spans when he lost control, striking the left-side guardrail. The Chevy then swerved to the right and crashed into a 1991 Geo passenger car being driven by 53-year-old Frank Hyde of Slidell.
Manale says troopers "placed both drivers under arrest for DWI and transported them to the Slidell Police Department where they submitted to a breath alcohol test registering over the legal limit."
Germann was charged with 1st offense DWI and careless operation and Hyde was charged with 1st offense DWI, and both were booked into the 9th ward jail in Slidell.
NOPD Spokeswoman Remi Braden says Germann was most recently assigned to the department's Gang Intelligence Unit.
According to Braden, Germann will remain suspended without pay until the department’s Public Integrity Bureau conducts an investigation into his case.
