Shooting leaves New Orleans baby dead, babysitter in hospital
Jay Vise Reporting
A toddler is dead after a double-shooting Thursday evening in the Central City area of New Orleans. The child's baby-sitter was also shot and is expected to live, according to authorities.
It happened at about 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of South Saratoga and Washington Avenue.
NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas said in a 10:00 p.m. press conference that two shooters, described as black males, were on foot as they opened fire and then fled the scene.
Police say after the shooters hit the woman and the one-year-old baby girl, the woman fled into a nearby residence, where the occupants called 911.
At the 10:00 p.m. press conference, NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas said, "We have very little to work with."
He implored residents to come forward with any information.
"Our community rallies up every time something terrible and tragic like this happens...So please, if you know anything, this happened at a time of the evening when there's people on the street. Call Crimestoppers, you don't have to say who you are."
Initial reports indicated the woman was the child's mother, but police now say it was her 18-year-old "caregiver."
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
