Cops: Mom arrested for tirade in school bus in Plaquemines

Cops in Plaquemines Parish say a mother was angry about an incident involving her daughter and another student on the school bus, so she took matters into her own hands.

"A parent boarded a school bus without permission, threatened a student, and shouted profanities at the bus driver," Sheriff's Commander Eric Becnel said in a news release.  "The incident was captured on a bus video surveillance system."

Investigators say 34-year-old Sayra L. Smith stormed onto the bus and refused to leave.

"Upon entering the bus, Smith stood on the top step next to the driver and verbally threatened a sixth-grade student who was seated toward the rear of the bus. When the bus driver attempted to intervene, Smith became even more irate and began to yell obscenities at the driver," Becnel said.  "The bus driver had to repeatedly ask Smith to exit the bus, before she eventually complied."

He says it all stemmed from an earlier dispute.

"Smith's daughter and the sixth-grade student were involved in an incident on the bus the day before. Because that incident is under an internal review by the School Board, the PPSO is unable to comment further."

Police arrested Smith for trespassing and disturbing the peace.

Becnel says police will not tolerate this kind of behavior.

"Under no circumstances will anyone be allowed to threaten, intimidate, or bully a student or a school employee. It is important for all to maintain a safe environment for our children and school administration."
