New details have emerged in the case of an elderly East Feliciana Parish woman who was shot and killed by an 8-year-old boy.
The victim has now been identified as 90-year-old Marie Smothers. The boy is a relative and she was his caregiver. The boy's name is being withheld, due to his age.
"The 8-year-old is the shooter," said Sheriff's spokesman Kevin Garig. "There'll be an autopsy performed to determine the exact cause of death, which we believe to be a gunshot wound to the head."
The shooting took place at the Country Breeze Mobile Home Park off La. Highway 67, east of Slaughter.
The boy initially told detectives that the gun he was playing with went off accidentally, but their investigation leads them to feel the child intentionally shot the woman from behind as she sat watching TV.
Garig says, by all accounts, they had a normal, loving relationship and a motive for the shooting is unknown.
"The investigation is still ongoing as to the exact reason that the victim had been shot," Garig said.
Garig also says the child was playing a violent video game, 'Grand Theft Auto 4', just before the shooting occurred.
The boy was released to his parents as the investigation continues.
