Truck explodes at Westbank chemical facility

A truck exploded this morning at a facility where the Harvey Canal meets the Mississippi River.

Officials say the truck was loading a chemical when it caught fire and blew up at the Kinder Morgan Chemical plant.

The fire is now out and one person was injured.

Sheriff's spokesman John Fortunato says one person suffered a minor leg injury in the explosion at the Kinder Morgan bulk storage facility in an industrial area.

Neighbors in the area of the 3400 block of River Road in Harvey described hearing explosions and then seeing smoke and flames.

"I heard 'BOOM' and my whole house shook," one man told WWL First News.  "It was just a big explosion with smoke and a fireball in the air."

Police have restricted traffic to River Road in the area.

According to its website, Houston-based Kinder Morgan stores and transfers petrochemicals, food oils and other bulk materials at several Louisiana facilities.
