Algiers ferry service suspended indefinitely

Officials say they do not know when ferry service may return to Algiers.

"The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces that the Algiers Point and Canal Street ferry route will remain out of service until further notice," spokeswoman Bambi Hall said in a news release.

It comes after electrical and mechanical problems on the boat that had been servicing Chalmette.

"Service between Algiers Point and Canal Street was suspended yesterday when the Motor Vessel St. John experienced a mechanical failure caused by the steering system. Consequently, DOTD was forced to move the M/V Levy from Algiers to Chalmette. DOTD has contacted a vendor to send a technician for further evaluation of the M/V St. John, the ferry servicing the Chalmette area," according to Hall.

She says they apologize for the inconvenience.

"Currently, there are no other boats available for service and the estimated time of service resuming at Algiers Point is unknown. DOTD is working diligently to determine the required repair."
