Louisiana the ''most disaster prone state'' in the country

A new ranking by financial website Kiplinger rates Louisiana as "America's Most Disaster-Prone State."

State Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says this comes as little surprise.

"There's no denying that we are very challenged by natural disasters," he insisted.

The report covers the past decade and shows Louisiana had 7 hurricanes, 2 tropical storms and 20 other severe weather incidents including tornadoes during that time.

Estimated insured property losses were over $32 billion.

It says that Katrina did $3 billion in insured damages, Gustav more than $2 billion and Isaac about $750 million.

Donelon says the numbers are even higher when you add in uninsured losses and those covered by federal flood insurance.

Florida was second; followed by Texas, Mississippi, and then New York.
