Two teens arrested in Bayou Corne sinkhole area burglaries
A pair of Assumption Parish teens have been arrested in connection with a residential burglary in the Bayou Corne sinkhole evacuation area. Sheriff Mike Waguespack says the burglary took place over the weekend and their investigation led them to two boys that lived in the area.
The sheriff says the two suspects, 18-year-old Billy Gros and a 14-year-old boy, lived in Bayou Corne and took advantage of those that evacuated the area. Waguespack says the two boys had the ability to watch their neighbors come and go from their homes and knew when to commit the crime.
Waguespack said the pair took several valuables from the home, including electronics and jewelry. The sheriff says it's sad the two teens took advantage of a bad situation where residents have been through enough already.
"It's a situation where these folks have gone through a lot. Neighbors should be looking out for neighbors, not taking advantage of a situation due to this event," Waguespack said.
The sheriff says the two were arrested and charged with simple burglary. He says the investigation is still ongoing to determine if they are also connected to another burglary in the area.
