Off-duty New Orleans firefighters killed in auto crash
The New Orleans Fire Department announced the loss of two of its members Sunday.
The off-duty firemen were killed in a single-vehicle accident in Long Beach, Mississippi early Sunday morning.
Firefighter Tommy Ashby was 28 years old and had been a member of the New Orleans Fire Department since September 20, 2007.
Firefighter Scott Blanchard was 27 years old and had been a member of the New Orleans Fire Department since August 29, 2010.
In a brief statement expressing his condolences, Interim-Superintendent Timothy McConnell stated that "Both members were highly praised by their commanding officers and respected by their peers. Although the careers of both men were relatively short, their talents, dedication and potential were obvious and will be missed."
Both men had volunteered their time and talents to restoring fire stations damaged during Hurricane Katrina.
